Paul Scholes ignited a social media storm after Manchester United's 1-2 defeat to Newcastle, posting a scathing critique of the team's performance that he later removed. The former midfielder's deleted Instagram message, shared after Man Utd played with a man advantage for the entire second half yet still lost, sarcastically stated: "Michael must have something special, because Man Utd have played like rubbish in the last four games. Good night," accompanied by a blowing kiss emoji. Scholes also lauded Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali with a heart emoji.

The post drew swift condemnation from many Manchester United fans, who deemed it inappropriate for a club legend to publicly disparage the team, particularly given his history with interim coach Michael Carrick. Scholes and Carrick were central midfield partners for Man Utd from 2006 to 2013, playing over 160 matches together for both the club and England. They shared in winning every major trophy for the "Red Devils." Fans expressed their disappointment, with one Reddit user, Grekm8, writing, "What is Scholes's problem? He's getting stranger and stranger," a comment that garnered over 2,300 upvotes. Another user, @TheJoshider10, stated, "Scholes is disgraceful and deserves criticism for this statement." @cptainvimes added, "Scholes used to be one of my favorite players. He and Carrick played hundreds of games together. I cannot believe what he just said."
This recent criticism follows Scholes's earlier public doubts about Carrick's suitability for the permanent managerial role. The 51-year-old former midfielder suggested Man Utd needed a more experienced, top-tier coach, even proposing Carlo Ancelotti as an ideal candidate. Scholes previously asserted, "Man Utd needs the presence of a leader and experience in winning titles. It's not certain Carrick can provide that right now."
Despite Scholes's harsh assessment, some observers argue that calling Man Utd's performance "rubbish" is an overstatement, considering the team's progress under Carrick. While recent matches have shown inconsistency, including a draw against West Ham and narrow wins over Everton and Crystal Palace, Carrick's overall record remains positive. In eight games leading Man Utd this season, he has secured six wins, one draw, and only one loss. This run has lifted the team to third place in the Premier League, maintaining their Champions League qualification hopes, even as the gap to rivals narrowed after matchday 29.
Carrick is credited with revitalizing morale in the dressing room, integrating young players, and bringing stability to the midfield. While Man Utd's playing style may still need refinement, the team's improved points tally is clear. Carrick has also maintained a composed approach to criticism from former players, stating that he remains focused on working with his squad, unaffected by external pressure.
