Premier league nears record summer spending

The premier league is on the verge of breaking its 2025 summer spending record after Wolves completed the signing of defender Jackson Tchatchoua from Verona for 14.6 million USD.

This deal brings the total spending of premier league clubs this summer to 3.12 billion USD, just 70 million USD short of the 3.19 billion USD record set in the summer of 2023.

With major clubs like Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham still active in the market, the premier league's total summer spending is almost certain to shatter the record.

The premier league's three most expensive signings so far have all come from the Bundesliga: Florian Wirtz (170 million USD from Leverkusen) and Hugo Ekitike (106 million USD from Frankfurt) to Liverpool, and Benjamin Sesko (99 million USD from Leipzig) to Man Utd.

Last summer's biggest premier league transfers included Chelsea's record-breaking purchase of Moises Caicedo from Brighton for approximately 142 million USD, Arsenal's 130 million USD acquisition of Declan Rice, Man City's 100 million USD signing of Josko Gvardiol, Man Utd's 93 million USD deal for Rasmus Hojlund, and Arsenal's purchase of Kai Havertz for 84 million USD.

This summer, premier league spending dwarfs that of Europe's other four major leagues. Serie A has spent around 440 million USD, equal to 14% of the premier league. The Bundesliga has spent about 306 million USD, less than 1/10 of the premier league total. La Liga and Ligue 1 have spent even less, at 237 and 123 million USD, respectively.

The top 5 highest-spending clubs of the 2025 summer transfer window all belong to the traditional "Big Six". Liverpool leads with approximately 346 million USD, followed by Chelsea (299 million USD), Man Utd (256 million USD), Arsenal (240 million USD), and Man City (191 million USD, excluding add-ons).

These investments not only aim to strengthen squads but also demonstrate the ambition to maintain English football's dominance on the continental stage.
