On Wednesday evening, 10/9, Liga Portugal (the Portuguese Professional Football League) held its awards ceremony for the 2024-2025 season. Striker Viktor Gyokeres received the "Player of the Year" award, after scoring 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting Lisbon last season.

However, the most noteworthy award went to the Portuguese national team captain, Cristiano Ronaldo. He received the title of "Greatest Player of All Time," but the scope of the accolade – whether it pertains to Portugal or the entire world – remained unclear. Ronaldo wasn't present at the gala but sent a video message.
"I want to thank Liga Portugal for this award," the 40-year-old forward said. "I am especially honored to be named the Greatest Player of All Time. I want to thank my teammates and coaches who have supported me throughout my career, enabling me to receive this wonderful award. Thanks to them, I constantly strive to improve."
During the 2024-2025 season, Ronaldo contributed to Portugal's UEFA Nations League victory. He scored in the second leg of the quarter-finals against Denmark, the semi-final against Germany, and the final against Spain. However, at the club level, the Al Nassr captain didn't win any titles.
Ronaldo also holds the record for most goals scored of all time, with 943 goals in 1,286 matches. He is only 57 goals away from reaching the coveted 1,000-goal milestone.
Liga Portugal also inducted former midfielders Luis Nani and Ricardo Quaresma into the Portuguese Football Hall of Fame. A group of PSG players, including Nuno Mendes, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, and Joao Neves, received the Sports Merit award for their Champions League title. 18-year-old Chelsea midfielder Geovany Quenda received the Young Player of the Year award.
The Liga Portugal awards take place annually, but this year included a special award for Ronaldo due to the Nations League victory. In the previous edition, Gyokeres also won Player of the Year, while the Best Coach award went to Ruben Amorim.
