Sinner extends record, reaches Miami Open semifinals

World number 2 Jannik Sinner defeated home favorite Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the Miami Open semifinals.

On Hard Rock court, Sinner capitalized on a break point in the opening game and encountered almost no resistance en route to a victory in just 71 minutes.

"The start of the match is crucial", Sinner said after the match on 26/3. "When you begin with a break, it provides confidence. Mentally, both players can experience highs and lows, so I focused on staying calm and capitalizing on opportunities".

Sinner dropped only 9 points on his serve, concluding the match with a performance rating of 9,65, notably above the ATP Tour average of 7,29. At times, the Italian silenced the home crowd with his dominant play.

Sinner, aiming to become the first male player to complete the "Sunshine Double" (winning Indian Wells and Miami Open in the same year) since Roger Federer in 2017, will face either third seed Alexander Zverev or 18th seed Francisco Cerundolo in the semifinals. The other semifinal features a matchup between Jiri Lehecka and Arthur Fils, both of whom held serve throughout their quarterfinal matches.

The 24-year-old has reached the semifinals in 4 of his 5 Miami Open appearances. Sinner extended his streak of consecutive set wins at Masters 1000 events to 30, building on a 15-match winning run from the second round of the Paris Masters 2025 through Miami. He surpassed Novak Djokovic's 2016 record of 24 consecutive set victories.

Sinner quickly asserted his dominance in his first match against Tiafoe since the 2024 Cincinnati Open final. The Italian player completely dominated, securing the first set with a nearly flawless performance.

Despite receiving support from the crowd, Tiafoe regained composure to fend off danger in the second set's opening game. However, Sinner was not held back for long. He maintained his baseline power and eventually capitalized on his third break point in the next return game. That proved to be the turning point, as Sinner dropped only one more game before securing the quarterfinal win.
