Los Angeles, a city synonymous with glamour and boundless creativity, is poised to host the World Cup 2026, transforming its iconic landscapes into a global football stage. This vibrant spirit was recently captured on the trail leading to the Hollywood Sign, where a social media personality, adorned in a cowboy hat, buckled boots, and vibrant pink feather wings, used their phone like an instrument. The scene, filled with catwalk music, intrigued and amused hikers, embodying Los Angeles's blend of showmanship and freedom—an ideal backdrop for a world-class sporting event.

Kathryn Schloessman, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission (LASEC), underscored the city's readiness, stating, "The World Cup is the biggest single-sport event globally, and we are well aware and prepared for it. Los Angeles was built to shine on grand occasions, regardless of individual interest." With its confident Hollywood spirit, Beverly Hills glamour, and distinctive resident personalities, Los Angeles possesses all the elements to become football's biggest stage this summer. Schloessman enthusiastically added, "This is a fantastic opportunity. It has been 30 years since the 1994 World Cup, and football is far more popular in the USA now. This is a chance to unite the entire community and welcome visitors to Los Angeles."
Son Heung-min, Tottenham, and Los Angeles's football legacy
Despite its renown for cinema and celebrities, Los Angeles has a long-standing football heritage in the USA. From successful local teams and picturesque beaches to the legacy of David Beckham and the recent arrival of Son Heung-min, the city is fully prepared for a spectacular World Cup.
Local Tottenham fan and Tulane alumnus, Vinny Weiss, exemplifies a football ambassador in Los Angeles. He recounts memorable matches, from the "Battle of the Bridge" in 2016 between Chelsea and Tottenham, to vibrant nights in London, demonstrating deep football passion and connection to the international fan community.
The Los Angeles Galaxy, a founding member of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1996, significantly elevated USA football with the signing of David Beckham in 2007. Hollywood also contributes to the sport's appeal, with actors Will Ferrell and Natalie Portman holding ownership stakes in Los Angeles FC and Angel City FC, respectively. Furthermore, legends Johan Cruyff and George Best played for the North American Soccer League (NASL)'s Los Angeles Aztecs in the 1970s.
Schloessman observed, "Los Angeles already has a substantial football fanbase. Now, we aim to extend that reach to those not yet passionate about the sport." She emphasized, "This is the world's largest event, spanning 39 days across three countries—everyone will be talking about it."
SoFi Stadium: The center of attention
SoFi Stadium, home to the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, is set to be the central venue for the World Cup 2026 in the USA. Since its opening in 2020, SoFi has hosted Super Bowl LVI, WrestleMania 39, Copa America, the 2023 College Football Playoff Championship, and concerts by artists like Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, Metallica, Beyonce, and Kendrick Lamar.

Tony Vroman, Director of Venue Operations Strategy at SoFi, explained that SoFi is more than just a stadium; it offers a comprehensive audience experience. "Modern technology, over 260 VIP suites, 13,000 premium seats, and a massive LED screen create a space that is both grand and intimate," he said. "The experience begins when you arrive at Hollywood Park, enjoy your day, watch the match, and conclude with dinner at the on-site restaurants."
The World Cup 2026 will serve as an opportunity for Los Angeles to solidify its position on the global sports map, while also preparing for Super Bowl 61 in 2027 and the 2028 Summer Olympics. SoFi is even planning to construct an Olympic-standard swimming pool to host aquatic events.
Global appeal and diverse community
Los Angeles's ability to attract an international audience stems not only from its facilities but also from its diverse community. The city is home to over 3 million foreign-born residents and nearly 2 million Hispanic individuals, primarily from Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America.

Son Heung-min's arrival at Los Angeles FC has created a significant buzz within the Korean community. This mirrors the impact Shohei Ohtani has had on the Japanese community at the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Fred Maas, Chief of Staff for the Chargers, noted, "This is a sports-loving city. Football, lacrosse, track and field, or the Olympics—we welcome them all." Schloessman added, "We rely on our community, heritage, and fan activities to generate excitement, even for those who might not typically follow football."
