Suarez advises young Brazilian talent against Messi comparisons

Luis Suarez believes comparisons to Lionel Messi could be detrimental to the career of 18-year-old forward Estevao, who has been dubbed "Little Messi".

"The comparison is unwise," Suarez said after Inter Miami's draw with Palmeiras in the final group stage match of the FIFA Club World Cup. "They are two different players, and Estevao has to make his own name. Of course, I admire his age and talent. Reaching this level at his age is admirable. But he is young and still has a lot to learn."

Estevao, nicknamed "Messinho" (Portuguese for "Little Messi"), has admired Messi since childhood. The 18-year-old Palmeiras forward also plays with a similar style to his idol, being left-footed, fond of dribbling, and a good finisher.

On 23/6, Estevao had the opportunity to meet his idol and Suarez when Palmeiras drew 2-2 with Inter Miami in Group A. During and after the Club World Cup match, the teenager successfully exchanged jerseys with the two superstars.

"It was unbelievable," Estevao said of meeting Messi. "He is a player I have followed since I was a child. I used to play with him in video games. It's great to now be playing with him on the pitch. He is my idol and my role model. I have learned so much. The most important things are dedication, courage, and fighting to the end."

According to some Brazilian football experts, Estevao is the most talented Brazilian player since Neymar. He began playing professionally for Palmeiras in 2023, at the age of 16. Next month, he will join Chelsea for a transfer fee of 38 million USD.

The teenage star has made 5 appearances for the Brazilian national team, including one match under new coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The Club World Cup is Estevao's farewell tournament with Palmeiras. Having topped Group A, Palmeiras will face fellow Brazilian side Botafogo, the second-place team in Group B, in the round of 16. If they win, Estevao and his teammates could potentially meet Chelsea in the quarterfinals. The English club is likely to finish second in Group D and face Benfica in the round of 16.

"Going to Chelsea is a dream come true, but I know I have to focus here first. It's not easy," Estevao said. "I am trying to focus as much as possible, to give my all and leave here on a good note. I want to leave Palmeiras with my head held high, knowing that I did my best."
