From the opening minutes, Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison tested Brighton's defense. However, a momentary lapse in concentration proved costly. In the 9th minute, forward Georginio Rutter's long pass found Yankuba Minteh, who outpaced goalkeeper Vicario before slotting the ball into an empty net. The home crowd erupted as Brighton took the lead, while Tottenham supporters looked on in dismay.
The early goal rattled Tottenham. Pushing forward for an equalizer, they left gaps at the back. In the 31st minute, Yasin Ayari unleashed a powerful shot from 20 meters out on the left, curling the ball past Vicario's outstretched hand. Manager Frank stood motionless on the touchline, while Tottenham players exchanged bewildered glances.

Tottenham regained some hope before halftime with Richarlison's close-range finish.
Tottenham dominated the second half, at one point enjoying 83% possession over a 10-minute period. Substitute Xavi Simons came on and repeatedly tested Brighton's goal with dangerous shots. The most notable was a low drive in the 68th minute that forced goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen into a full-stretch save, leaving Tottenham fans holding their breath and then lamenting the missed opportunity.
