UFC president Dana White announced the surprising news at a press conference on 21/6 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the site of a UFC Fight Night event. He said Jones called UFC executives the day before to inform them of his decision.
Jones confirmed the news on social media that same day, stating he had given the decision much thought and wanted to take time to express his deepest gratitude for his journey with the UFC. "MMA will always be a part of me, and I'm excited to see how I can continue to contribute to the sport and inspire others in new ways," the American fighter added.

A highly anticipated matchup between Jones and Aspinall was considered one of the biggest potential fights in UFC heavyweight history. However, Jones repeatedly downplayed the possibility, claiming a victory over Aspinall wouldn't add to his legacy.
"I don't want to say I'm retired because I still have the fighting spirit," Jones said in a recent podcast. "Right now, I'm not really interested in competing. When that desire returns, I'll dedicate myself fully."
Jones's repeated postponement of a fight with Aspinall, who held the interim title for 18 months, led other fighters to call for him to be stripped of the belt. An online petition calling for Jones to be stripped of his title garnered nearly 200,000 signatures.
With Jones's sudden retirement, Aspinall becomes the undisputed champion. White said the UFC would work with Aspinall next week to schedule his first title defense.
"I feel bad for Aspinall. He lost a lot of time and money, but we'll make it up to him. Aspinall is a good guy, always ready to fight anyone, anytime, anywhere," the UFC president said. "Aspinall will be a great heavyweight champion, and I'm excited to work with him."
Jones is considered one of the best mixed martial arts fighters in history, with 28 wins in 30 professional fights. He holds numerous records in the light heavyweight division, including most title defenses, most wins, and longest winning streak.
Between 2015 and 2017, Jones was involved in several controversies and was stripped of his title three times. He returned in 2018 and reclaimed the light heavyweight title by defeating Alexander Gustafsson. The American fighter relinquished the title in 2020, taking a three-year hiatus before returning to defeat Ciryl Gane for the heavyweight title.
Jones defended the belt with a technical knockout victory over Stipe Miocic in 11/2024, delivering a spinning back kick to the midsection. He caused a stir by celebrating with US President Donald Trump's dance. Jones has not competed since.
