The USATF Half Marathon Championships, organized by USA Track & Field (USATF) in Atlanta on 1/3, concluded amidst controversy. The leading group of female athletes was misdirected by a lead vehicle at a crucial stage.
With less than two miles (3.2 km) remaining to the finish line, Jess McClain held a significant lead over Ednah Kurgat and Emma Grace Hurley. The lead bicycle unexpectedly veered off the official route, and all three athletes followed, going off course.
When McClain realized the error, she turned back and rejoined the correct course. However, the race order had changed significantly. She finished ninth with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes, 27 seconds. Hurley and Kurgat placed 12th and 13th respectively.

Meanwhile, Molly Born, who had been over one minute behind the frontrunners, surged to claim victory with a time of 1 hour, 9 minutes, 43 seconds. Carrie Ellwood (1 hour, 9 minutes, 47 seconds) and Annie Rodenfels (1 hour, 10 minutes, 12 seconds) completed the podium. Wesley Kiptoo secured the championship in the men's event.
This outcome had major repercussions for McClain. Before the incident, she was poised to win her first national title and secure an automatic spot at the 2026 World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. Her drop to ninth place also meant she forfeited the 20,000 USD prize awarded to the national champion.
Immediately after the race, the affected athletes filed official complaints with USATF, requesting a review of the results. These initial complaints were dismissed, prompting the athletes to submit appeals.
In an official statement, USATF announced that the appeals panel determined the race did not comply with Article 243 of the competition rules. The course was not adequately marked at the point of confusion, which contributed to the leading group being misdirected. However, the panel also concluded that no regulation allowed for altering the finish order, thus the published results stood.
According to current USATF regulations, athletes are responsible for knowing the race course and ensuring they run on the correct path.

USATF stressed that the lead vehicle was managed by the local organizing committee under Article 243.2.c of the 2026 competition rules. They advised that all questions regarding the course and lead vehicles should be directed to the Atlanta Track Club.
The event also served as a selection trial for the 2026 World Road Running Championships. USATF confirmed that the team would not be finalized until May and would thoroughly review the incident before making a final decision, aiming to ensure fairness for all involved athletes.
Commenting on television, former long-distance runner Tim Hutchings suggested that the confusion was understandable in a high-pressure competitive environment. Athletes often maintain maximum focus and rely on lead vehicles rather than double-checking the route.
McClain, 34, is a veteran figure in US athletics, having placed eighth in the marathon at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
