Van Dijk helps Liverpool secure a hard-fought Premier League victory

Liverpool became the first club to win at Sunderland's home ground this season, with a 1-0 victory in round 26 of the Premier League.

The match at the Stadium of Light on 11/2 showcased a stellar performance from Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch center-back became the first player in the last five Premier League seasons to score, make more than 10 aerial clearances (11), and win more than 5 aerial duels (8) in a single match.

The decisive moment arrived in the 61st minute. From Mohamed Salah's corner on the right wing, Van Dijk rose high amidst opposition defenders, powerfully heading the ball diagonally into the net. Habib Diarra, standing on the goal line, attempted to clear it but the ball still went in.

Initially, the goal was ruled an own goal. However, after review, Premier League organizers confirmed Van Dijk as the scorer. This made Van Dijk Liverpool's highest-scoring defender in the Premier League, surpassing Sami Hyypia's previous record of 22 goals. Salah also made his mark with his 92nd Premier League assist for Liverpool, matching Steven Gerrard's club record in the competition.

More importantly, the two experienced Liverpool players inspired a crucial victory in the race for top 4. With Man Utd and Chelsea both drawing in earlier matches, these three valuable points allow Liverpool to continue their strong pursuit. Arne Slot's team remains in sixth place with 42 points, but they are now only two points behind Chelsea and three points behind Man Utd.
