Vietnam – Malaysia: deciding the ticket to the ASEAN Cup 2026 final

Vietnam is determined to overcome Malaysia in the second leg of the semi-final, aiming for a third consecutive Southeast Asian final against familiar opponent Thailand.

A two-zero victory in the first leg on Malaysian soil gives coach Kim Sang-sik's team the advantage for tonight's return match at My Dinh Stadium. The national team only needs to avoid losing by more than one goal to secure a spot in the final.

History and statistics strongly favor Vietnam. Since the introduction of two-leg semi-finals and finals, the Southeast Asian tournament has never seen a team overturn a two-goal deficit in the second leg. In the current ASEAN Cup 2026, Singapore's determined two-one win on Thailand's home ground was insufficient after they had lost one-three at home.

Vietnam is unbeaten in its last 11 matches against Malaysia, securing ten victories. Malaysia has scored only four goals in these encounters, including a two-two draw in the first leg of the 2018 AFF Cup final. Additionally, Vietnam holds a Southeast Asian record with an unbeaten streak of 23 matches across all competitions.

While these statistics boost confidence, the players' performance ultimately determines success. Defender Pham Xuan Manh affirmed that the entire team has one goal: victory to reach the final. Coach Kim Sang-sik emphasized that the players must avoid complacency and approach the match as if it were still tied zero-zero.

A lack of focus and errors once cost Vietnam dearly against Malaysia in 2014. Coach Toshiya Miura's team made a strong impression by winning two-one in the first leg of the AFF Cup semi-final at a packed Shah Alam Stadium. However, just days later, the same team suffered a two-four defeat at My Dinh Stadium. Negative suspicions targeted the players, but a police investigation concluded that all were individual errors during the match.

The 2014 win at My Dinh Stadium remains a significant motivation for coach Tan Cheng Hoe's team. He believes his team has "lost a match, not the war." Despite serious squad injuries, Malaysia will still play offensively, forcing Vietnam to defend.

After 12 years, Vietnam now stands in a completely different position, having added two more Southeast Asian championships. This generation of players, tempered by numerous major tournaments, rarely repeats past mistakes. Improved mental strength has helped Vietnam become a stable force in the region, with losses only to Thailand and Indonesia in the past 10 years.

The current Malaysian team is also not the same as 12 years ago, lacking their strongest squad, grit, determination, and special players. They are labeled a "C team" and, despite creating difficulties for Vietnam in the first leg, ultimately lost due to an own goal and a moment of brilliance from an opponent.

Coach Kim Sang-sik's team needs to perform to its full potential and avoid errors to achieve its goal of reaching the final, where Thailand is observing and waiting. If Vietnam meets Thailand, Southeast Asia will witness, for the first time, a pairing appearing three consecutive times in the final, affirming the unshakeable strength of both footballing nations.
