Vietnam predicted to win narrowly against Malaysia

Many international news outlets predict Vietnam will secure only a minimal margin victory against Malaysia in the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinal second leg on the evening of 19/8.

Vietnam holds a significant advantage over Malaysia as they return to My Dinh Stadium for the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinal second leg. However, international news sites suggest the national team may not need or be able to secure a large win, as Malaysia will be forced to attack to overturn the deficit.

On the Russian analysis site Betzona, Vietnam is considered the clear favorite after their 2-0 victory in Kuala Lumpur. This result puts coach Kim Sang-sik's squad on the verge of reaching the final.

However, Betzona noted that the first-leg score did not fully reflect the match's dynamics. Vietnam created only one clear chance, while Malaysia had three such opportunities. The expected goals (xG) statistics were also quite balanced, at 1.07 and 1.00 respectively. Goalkeeper Le Giang Patrik made several important saves to maintain Vietnam's lead.

Nguyen Xuan Son opened the scoring for Vietnam in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time, before Faris Danish scored an own goal in the 86th minute. Therefore, Malaysia still has reason to believe they can pose a challenge in the second leg.

According to Betzona, coach Kim Sang-sik was not entirely satisfied with Vietnam's performance, particularly in defending the flanks. The national team may opt for a pragmatic approach at My Dinh instead of seeking a wide-margin victory.

The team has scored 12 goals away in the tournament but only three at My Dinh Stadium. With a two-goal advantage, Vietnam does not need to push the pace too high and can prioritize controlling the tempo, limiting risks, and conserving energy for the final if they advance. The first leg of the final takes place on the evening of 22/8, just three days after the semifinal second leg in Hanoi.

Malaysia is considered capable of maintaining a difficult playing style. Tan Cheng Hoe's squad leads the ASEAN Cup in successful challenges, averaging 41.2 times per match, and boasts a 63.68% accuracy rate on long passes.

The Russian news site also recalled the 2014 memory when Malaysia lost 1-2 to Vietnam at home in the semifinal first leg but then won 4-2 at My Dinh. This gives the visiting team hope of an upset, although this time they need to score two goals to force extra time.

Captain Paulo Josue, with three goals in the tournament, is a notable attacking threat for Malaysia. Additionally, 21-year-old winger Pavithran Gunalan was named man of the match two times in the group stage.

Malaysia is often difficult to defeat by a large margin. In their 17 recent official matches, they did not lose by more than one goal in 14 matches. Away from home, this figure stands at 9 out of their 12 recent matches. Therefore, Betzona's prediction leans towards Vietnam winning by no more than one goal, rather than a dominant performance.

However, other prediction sites offer contrasting views. French site WinComparator also rates Vietnam as more likely to win, with a 70% probability. The probability of a draw is 9%, while a Malaysia win is 21%.

This site predicts a 62.24% probability of three or more goals in the match, while the probability of both teams scoring is only 37.5%. These figures suggest Vietnam could win 3-0.

Recent form also favors the hosts. Vietnam has won four and drawn one of their five recent matches. Besides a 0-0 draw with Singapore, the national team has defeated Indonesia 3-0, Timor Leste 7-0, Campuchia 3-1, and Malaysia 2-0.

Malaysia's performance has been less consistent. They beat Myanmar 2-1, Laos 4-0, and Philippines 1-0, but lost 0-2 to Thailand and Vietnam.

Another English site, Betimate, also predicts a 1-0 victory for Vietnam. In their three recent encounters, Vietnam won two matches, while Malaysia won one. The site writes that the second leg may feature fewer goals. Vietnam is considered to have a good defense, while Malaysia has scored only one goal in their three recent matches. Thus, a minimal victory for the hosts aligns with the expected match flow.

An Indian sports news site, Top Bookies, offers a slightly more positive prediction, choosing Vietnam to win 2-0. This site highly rates Vietnam's home advantage, recent form, and superior head-to-head record.

The national team has won all 8 recent encounters with Malaysia. In the first leg, Vietnam held only 46% possession but still won 2-0. Malaysia controlled the ball for 54%, took 10 shots, and created three clear chances, but failed to score.

Vietnam completed 360 passes with an 80% accuracy rate, while Malaysia had 415 passes. These numbers show that the visiting team was not entirely outplayed in terms of ball control, but effectiveness at both ends of the pitch made the decisive difference.

A Portuguese site, Football Predictions AI, also leans towards a Vietnam victory over Malaysia. Its AI-based algorithm suggests a low-scoring match, with an option for under three goals and a high probability of Malaysia not scoring. The predicted score is Vietnam to win 2-0, similar to the first leg.

Vietnam's biggest advantage before the second leg remains their two-goal lead. Malaysia must attack from the start to maintain hope, which could expose spaces for Vietnamese forwards to exploit. Conversely, the hosts are not under pressure to score early and can proactively choose a safe playing style.

If they reach the final, Vietnam will reunite with Thailand. This would mark the third consecutive time these two teams meet in the battle for the Southeast Asian championship.
