Vietnam - Thailand: a narrow window of opportunity for quarterfinals

To reach the ASIAD 20 women's football quarterfinals, coach Hoang Van Phuc's team must defeat Thailand on the afternoon of 21/9 with a sufficient goal difference to secure a spot as one of the best third-place teams in the group stage.

The match between Vietnam and Thailand will kick off at 17:30 on 21/9 at Nagai Stadium in Osaka.

Both Vietnam and Thailand are currently without points after two defeats. Vietnam holds a slight edge, ranked above Thailand due to scoring one goal against Taiwan. This gives coach Hoang Van Phuc's team a psychological advantage, as a draw would secure them third place in the group. However, merely drawing is insufficient; a victory, and a significant one, is crucial for them to advance to the quarterfinals as one of the best third-place teams.

"After two losses, we are sad but not disheartened", defender Hoang Thi Loan said. "We are united, encouraging each other to play well against Thailand and advance to the next round. I believe the team will succeed".

Coach Hoang Van Phuc has strategically decided to commit full resources to the match against Thailand. He rested key players, including Hai Yen, Diem My, Bich Thuy, and Tran Thu, during the previous loss to Japan. The coach stressed the need for a more aggressive offense and efficient use of scoring opportunities to overcome their rivals.

"Our players are in peak physical condition. With their strong determination, we are confident they will deliver what the fans expect: a victory over Thailand to advance to the quarterfinals", said the 62-year-old coach.

Thailand shares Vietnam's ambition and determination. Their young squad, while physically strong, lacks experience. Despite this, Vietnam must remain vigilant against Thailand's agile and fast offensive line.

In ten encounters since 2016, Vietnam has only lost once to Thailand, which occurred in 2016 after a 1-1 draw in regular time led to a penalty shootout defeat.
