August travel destinations

As the summer travel season winds down, August offers a respite from the crowds, with pleasant weather ideal for sightseeing and exploration.

This guide presents a selection of destinations based on cultural events, natural experiences, popularity among Vietnamese travelers, ease of travel, and suitable weather conditions.

Celebrating National Day in Hanoi

In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of National Day on 2/9, Hanoi will host numerous events throughout August, blending history, culture, cuisine, and the arts.

Three major concerts will showcase the national spirit, featuring renowned artists and elaborate stage productions: V Concert - Radiant Vietnam (9/8), National Concert - Homeland in My Heart (10/8), and 8Wonder Summer 2025: Moments of Wonder (23/8).

Hanoi will also offer city exploration tours highlighting historical sites associated with the August Revolution, along with promotional programs for domestic tourism, culinary experiences, and "Hanoi by Night" activities. These unique experiences combine historical storytelling with culinary delights.

Early rice harvest season in northern provinces

Destinations like Y Ty, Ta Van, Nam Cang (Lao Cai), and Ta Xua (Son La) are known for their early rice harvests, typically around the last week of August. The viewing period usually lasts about two weeks, preceding the golden rice season in other regions. This is also a time of seasonal transition, with the weather turning cooler.

Photography enthusiasts should take advantage of the early morning or late afternoon light for more vibrant shots. Consider staying in homestays or resorts with views of the rice paddies. However, be mindful of travel conditions and weather forecasts, as flash floods can occur due to storms.

Ideal time to visit Hue

August in Hue offers a break from the summer heat but precedes the rainy season, making it an ideal time for travel. Hue offers attractions for diverse interests. Beyond the familiar tombs and imperial city, visitors can explore areas outside the city center, such as Thuan An Beach, Thanh Tan Hot Springs, Tam Giang Lagoon, Bach Ma National Park, and Lap An Lagoon.

Hue's cuisine is renowned for its variety, flavor, and affordability. Must-try dishes include bun bo (beef noodle soup), com hen (clam rice), bun thit nuong (grilled pork vermicelli), banh canh (thick noodle soup), nem lui (grilled minced pork skewers), hot vit lon om bau (balut steamed in coconut), various banh (cakes), che (sweet desserts), me xuong (sesame candy), and the local specialty, tom chua (fermented shrimp). Don't forget to sample the salt coffee, as Hue is considered its birthplace.

Known as a "shopping paradise," Singapore has two major sale seasons: summer and year-end. August marks the final month of the summer sales. Discounts of 70-90% apply to various items, including fashion, electronics, cosmetics, household goods, souvenirs, and local specialties, island-wide.

Popular shopping destinations for bargain hunters include Orchard Road, Bugis Street, Vivo City, Mustafa Centre, Haji Lane, and Changi Airport. Weekends and evenings tend to be crowded, so consider visiting weekday mornings (after 10 a.m. when stores open) or afternoons for a more comfortable shopping experience.

Exploring China

Tourist crowds in China thin out in August as the summer travel season ends and before the autumn peak begins. This is an opportune time for travelers seeking less crowded destinations, especially those interested in nature, culture, and historical experiences. Places like Jiuzhaigou and Lijiang, which are typically packed in September and October, start to attract visitors in August. Other recommended destinations include Kunming, Hangzhou, Zhangjiajie, Gansu, and Guangzhou.

Airfare to China is currently favorable, ranging from 3.5 million VND to around 8 million VND depending on the destination. However, be aware of visa policy changes implemented in July, including a financial proof requirement.
