Flight makes emergency landing due to disruptive passenger demanding to strip

A flight from Nha Trang to Bangkok on 30/1 made an emergency landing after a passenger stripped, threatened the crew, and attempted to jump from the plane.

The incident occurred on the evening of 30/1 aboard an Air Asia international flight, departing from Cam Ranh Airport, Nha Trang, and bound for Don Mueang Airport, Bangkok. According to Russian media, the male passenger, whose identity has not been released, began exhibiting unusual behavior shortly after takeoff.

Several fellow passengers reported that the male tourist initially met and conversed with another man on the plane before his mental state became unstable.

"He repeatedly went to the lavatory in an agitated state", a passenger stated.

The situation escalated when he began arguing fiercely with flight attendants, repeatedly demanding to disembark immediately despite the plane being airborne. While surrounding passengers attempted to calm him, the man remained agitated, began shouting, and became aggressive, threatening to assault the crew.

At the peak of the incident, the male passenger stripped off his clothes, remaining only in his underwear, and ran down the cabin aisle. He repeatedly tried to open an emergency exit to leave the aircraft as it approached Thai airspace.

Facing an emergency threatening flight safety, the captain notified air traffic control and performed an emergency landing at Don Mueang Airport. Immediately after the plane landed and the doors opened around 19h local time, before the air stairs could even reach the aircraft, the male tourist recklessly jumped directly from the plane's door onto the runway in an attempt to escape.

The jump from a height resulted in leg injuries. Airport security and Thai police quickly arrived at the scene to subdue and apprehend the individual. The Russian news outlet Shot reported severe disruption to the flight. After his unsuccessful escape attempt, police escorted him to headquarters for medical and security investigations.

Currently, the airline has not issued an official statement regarding the extent of damages and additional costs incurred due to the emergency landing. However, according to international aviation regulations, disruptive passengers like this can face substantial financial penalties, a permanent flight ban, and criminal prosecution depending on the severity of their actions threatening aviation security.

This is not the first time airlines have recorded cases of passengers exhibiting uncontrolled behavior on flights.

In 2/2025, a similar incident occurred on a flight from Khabarovsk, Russia, to Phuket, Thailand. A female passenger, after consuming alcoholic beverages, spontaneously stripped in her seat and behaved inappropriately toward other passengers. She later fainted and was closely monitored by the crew until the plane landed safely.
