A young girl and her mother were rescued after becoming trapped waist-deep in wet sand on 13/3 near Three Shells lagoon in Southend, Essex. Surveillance camera footage captured the incident at 5:20 PM, showing the girl playing on the sand before suddenly sinking. Her mother immediately rushed to help but also became stuck, unable to free herself from the wet sand.
Hearing cries for help, four men working at the nearby Adventure Island amusement park—Lee Jones, Will Canning, Tim Sykes, and Mitchel Francis—quickly responded. They used ropes to pull the mother and daughter from the sinking sand.
Bystanders on the beach had already alerted the coastguard. Rescue teams arrived, using specialized equipment to dig and loosen the surrounding sand, aiding the full release of the two victims. The rescue unfolded as the tide was rising, increasing the risk of water filling the sand hole. The mother and daughter were pulled to safety by the four men from Adventure Island and a truck driver using a rope. After being brought out of the hazardous area, both received health checks and sustained no serious injuries.

A representative from Adventure Island stated that the area where the incident occurred was part of a new sand deposit added by the local council during high tide. "Fortunately, this happened while staff were still on site at the end of the day, and they intervened when needed most," the representative said.
Following the incident, local authorities thanked the rescue teams for their prompt response. They installed barriers and warning signs about the risk of deep sinking wet sand around the lagoon area. These warnings will remain until further inspections confirm the area is safe.

Experts warn that digging deep holes on beaches is a potentially risky activity often underestimated. Hole walls can collapse unexpectedly, especially when the sand is damp or saturated with seawater, making it difficult for individuals underneath to escape.
Tourists are advised not to dig excessively deep holes when playing on the beach. They should also pay attention to terrain conditions and tidal changes to avoid similar accidents.
