Again, 'mole people' emerge from New York manhole

New York police are investigating a new video showing three individuals emerging from a Manhattan manhole, months after similar incidents occurred.

A video posted on TikTok on 21/8 captured three individuals in full-body protective suits and headlamps quickly climbing from a steaming manhole. The incident occurred at the intersection of 32nd Street and 7th Avenue, just blocks from the bustling transportation hub and Madison Square Garden.

The video uploader stated the event took place after 4h on 18/8. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is aware of the video and stated, "Police have not made any arrests, and the investigation continues."

A spokesperson for the city's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced on 23/8 that an inspection of the sewer system in the incident area found no infrastructure damage. The DEP's statement emphasized that entering the underground sewer system is illegal and dangerous.

The underground sewer system can harbor dangers, including deadly toxic gases, unstable surfaces, flood risks, and confined spaces. For these reasons, residents must not enter pipes, drains, catch basins, manholes, or outfalls, the statement warned.

Previously, in May, widely shared videos showed at least 7 men, equipped with headlamps, waders, and gloves, gathered around a manhole at 2h in Brooklyn. One man lifted the manhole cover, allowing others to emerge and change clothes near the McDonald and Bedford Avenues intersection. It is unclear if this incident relates to previous events, though the attire — protective gear and headlamps — was similar.

At that time, a senior law enforcement official theorized these individuals were searching for valuables. Police investigations found no immediate public threat or damage to the drainage system.

New York's vast, 12,000 km long sewer system has long drawn people hoping to find dropped wallets or jewelry through manhole grates.
