Thousands of Argentine fans gathered in Buenos Aires on the evening of 19/7 to watch the World Cup final. Following their team's defeat, disappointment quickly escalated into unrest among many supporters.
The situation deteriorated when some fans scaled the protective barriers of the Obelisk, a national monument 67,5 m tall. Riot police were deployed, and social media images depicted an officer kicking a fan in the head.

Violence escalated at 23h45 on 19/7, with fans throwing stones and bottles at police. Security forces responded using rubber bullets, tear gas, and water cannons.
Buenos Aires authorities blocked several main streets in the capital to manage the situation. At least 15 individuals were arrested, and dozens were injured, including 7 officers.
Beyond the domestic unrest, Argentine players engaged in a brawl with Spanish players following the match. During the trophy ceremony in New Jersey, the South American team turned their backs on their opponents. FIFA has launched an investigation into Argentina's conduct.

Despite the defeat, President Javier Milei announced that Argentina should observe a national holiday, allowing the players to choose the date. He opted not to attend the final at MetLife stadium, stating he wished to "avoid bringing bad luck" as he had not attended previous matches.
Argentina previously observed a national holiday after winning the 2022 World Cup. That holiday marked the players' return to Buenos Aires for a parade attended by millions.
