California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on X on 15/6 that federal agents had contacted his relatives, friends, and former employees, requesting random records concerning him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
"My wife and I have been placed on Donald Trump's target list. After calling for my arrest last year, Mr. Trump directed the Department of Justice to investigate us. To bring me down, Mr. Trump is dragging my wife into this," Newsom said.
He accused the US Department of Justice under Trump of "abusing the grand jury process," citing how the Trump administration previously investigated several individuals considered political opponents, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey, and former Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

"Trump is not just targeting me for my posts criticizing him," Newsom, a Democrat, wrote. "Trump is targeting me because I am considering running for president, because he hates that I constantly expose his lies."
The California Governor did not specify what information or documents federal investigators requested. "Trump has chosen the wrong target; we have nothing to hide," Newsom stated.
The White House and the Department of Justice declined to comment on the allegations made by the California Governor.
Newsom's aides later said the FBI and the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had contacted dozens of people to investigate the Governor and his wife. Some questions posed related to their financial transactions.
Jennifer Siebel Newsom calls herself California's "first partner" and is a documentary filmmaker. She founded two non-profit organizations promoting gender equality: Representation Project and California Partners Project.
If confirmed, this would be the latest case of the US Department of Justice investigating an official who publicly criticized President Trump.
