Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Washington on 7/10, his second trip to the US since April, to ease trade and tariff tensions with President Donald Trump. This visit followed months of disputes between the two nations.
Carney initiated the meeting with humor, telling Trump, "I am wearing a red tie for you," a nod to the Republican Party's signature color, as they shook hands in the White House's West Wing.
Trump, however, sported a blue tie. This contrasted with their first White House meeting in 5/2025, when Carney wore navy blue and Trump chose red.
The bilateral discussion occurred months after the US implemented 35% tariffs on Canadian goods, effective 1/8/2025. While President Trump promised Carney that the Canadian delegation would "leave happy," he offered no further details. Canada is the only G7 nation yet to secure a trade agreement with the US.
Prime Minister Carney praised Trump's foreign policy record, citing his role in resolving conflicts between India and Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia, and his ongoing mediation in Gaza.
The conversation took an unexpected turn when Trump interrupted, suggesting the annexation of Canada into the US. Carney responded with a wry smile and the exclamation, "No, that is not what I meant."
Trump argued that Canada and Mexico, as neighbors, have a "natural conflict" with the US due to shared market competition. Carney, however, expressed confidence that Canada would "reach the right agreement" with the US, its largest trading partner, which receives 75% of Canadian exports.
