No individual or organization has claimed responsibility, and Mexican authorities have not yet identified the perpetrators. Michoacan state is known for the operations of several drug gangs, including the New Michoacan Family and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), both designated as terrorist organizations by the US.
Earlier in november, Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan city in Michoacan state, was assassinated during a Day of the Dead festival. Protests erupted afterwards and lasted for two days, with participants setting fire to several government offices and clashing with police. The unrest resulted in at least 100 injuries.
Car bombings are not a common attack method in Mexico. A similar incident occurred in 10/2024 in Guanajuato state, which borders Michoacan, injuring three people.
