The Russian Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation following a car explosion near a police station on Yeletskaya street in southern Moscow early this morning. The incident severely injured two Russian traffic police officers. "Investigators and forensic experts are currently determining the circumstances that led to the event," the agency stated.
This explosion occurred two days after lieutenant general Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Combat Training Department of the Russian General Staff, was assassinated on Yasenevaya street. A bomb, planted under Sarvarov's car, detonated just seconds after the vehicle began to move. Yeletskaya street and Yasenevaya street intersect.
Russian officials stated they are investigating multiple leads, including the possibility that Ukrainian intelligence was behind the assassination.
Ukraine has not yet commented on the information. Ukrainian intelligence has previously admitted to carrying out several assassinations of high-ranking Russian officers using car bombs.
Other similar incidents have targeted Russian military officials. Lieutenant general Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy head of the Operations Department of the Russian General Staff, also died in a car bomb explosion in the city of Balashikha, east of the capital Moscow, in April.
In December 2024, a bomb detonated in southeastern Moscow, killing lieutenant general Igor Kirillov, commander of Russia's Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Defense Forces, along with his assistant, major Ilya Polikarpov.
