California Representative Ro Khanna believes impeaching President Donald Trump would be the right action for Democrats if they reclaim the House. Appearing on NBC's Meet the Press on 27/9, Khanna stated this move would allow the House to "set a standard" for accountability and ensure "constitutional values."

"Impeachment would send a message that the US cannot engage in an unauthorized war in Iran without constitutional approval," Khanna stated. "It would oppose the firing of federal employees despite congressional objections. Impeachment is to prevent deals with foreign governments aimed at enriching family members."

If Democrats gain control of the House after the November midterm elections, the California representative suggested that impeachment efforts could proceed alongside the new Congress's first 100-day agenda.

Khanna also urged the Trump administration to accept Iran's 7-day peace proposal, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and implement a ceasefire.

The Democratic representative stated Washington does not necessarily have to accept all of Tehran's conditions. He emphasized that the US must firmly commit to not pursuing a regime change war in Iran. He criticized President Trump's recent statement at the United Nations, where the US president threatened to obliterate the Middle Eastern nation.

President Trump on 27/9 rejected Iran's peace proposal, stating that "if it had been sent last year, it would have been worth accepting," according to Axios. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said its negotiators are awaiting an official response from the US through intermediaries. He added that Tehran is "fully prepared" to resume attacks if the US strikes Iran after the midterm elections.

Trump was impeached two times by the House during his first term, but the Senate did not convict him. The possibility of Democrats pursuing a third impeachment against Trump has been mentioned several times this year.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that senior party members on the Judiciary Committee and the Oversight and Government Reform Committee will lead the party's activities, including impeachment options, to hold the administration accountable if Democrats regain a House majority.

Some Republican representatives, including Representative Jim Jordan, also predicted Democrats would seek to impeach Trump if they regain the House. Jordan believes such a scenario would not be for "legitimate oversight" but rather political infighting.

Jordan also warned that Democrats might open investigations targeting the President's family and several cabinet members, including Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel, Attorney General Todd Blanche, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
