Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated at the United Nations General Assembly on 26/9 that Europe "is doing everything possible to undermine the peace talks that President Donald Trump's administration is interested in." He reiterated Russia's determination to achieve its special operation goals in Ukraine, emphasizing the elimination of national security threats and the restoration of peaceful life. "Under any circumstances, this will happen," he affirmed.

On the same day, Foreign Minister Lavrov held a meeting with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, marking the first encounter between the foreign ministers of the two nations since the Ukraine conflict began in February 2022. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova confirmed that Germany requested the 20-minute discussion.

This meeting occurred amidst severely escalating tensions between Berlin and Moscow. Germany recently accused Russia of orchestrating a drone attack on Leipzig airport, leading both countries to order the closure of each other's consulates. A German diplomat informed AFP that Mr. Wadephul urged Russia to cease its "dangerous path of escalation" against Germany, Europe, and NATO. The diplomat added that Germany's foreign minister underscored that "incidents such as the unsuccessful attack in Leipzig or other attacks will not shake Germany's resolve to support Ukraine."

The discussion, which focused primarily on the Ukraine issue, was held behind closed doors without reporters present. Mr. Lavrov's last meeting with a German foreign minister was in January 2022, less than one month before the outbreak of hostilities. Germany continues to be a crucial ally and a major aid provider to Ukraine.
