Ron Shinnick, mayor of Cohutta, a town in northwest Georgia, United States, shut down the Cohutta Police Department and fired all ten officers earlier this week. US news channel WDEF reported this on 9/5, leaving the town of nearly one thousand residents without a police force to maintain order.
On the morning of 6/5, a notice was posted on the police department's door stating: "The department has been dissolved, all personnel have been terminated." It remains unclear whether the officers received prior notification of this decision.

The dismissal of Cohutta's entire law enforcement force raised questions about the mayor's leadership, suspicions of retaliation, and potential safety risks in the town.
Mayor Shinnick's decision followed what were described as "inappropriate comments" made by Cohutta Police Department officers on Facebook about his wife, Pat Shinnick.
Pat Shinnick previously served as Cohutta's town clerk but was dismissed over allegations of creating a "hostile work environment." Last month, Cohutta Police Department officers filed a complaint, alleging that Pat Shinnick continued to work despite her dismissal and maintained access to residents' personal information.
Following these complaints, Mayor Shinnick, Police Chief Greg Fowler, and town attorney Brian Rayburn stated in a press conference that the matter had been resolved through "open dialogue and good-faith reconciliation."
However, one week later, the entire Cohutta Police Department was disbanded.

"This entire situation stems from the mayor's personal vendetta. I fully believe that", former police sergeant Jeremy May told the media. "We fought for transparency, and as a result, everyone lost their jobs."
While the town operated without a police department, the Whitfield County Sheriff's office announced it would take over law enforcement duties.
The Cohutta Town Council held an emergency meeting on 8/5 to discuss the issue. They subsequently voted to re-establish the Police Department and rehire the officers, while also approving a resolution prohibiting the mayor from dismissing them for the next 30 days.
Some residents called for Mayor Shinnick's resignation, but the Cohutta Town Council stated they are not yet considering the matter.
