The visit by General Secretary, President To Lam and his spouse comes at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his spouse, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Vietnam and Thailand established diplomatic relations in 8/1976, upgrading their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 5/2025. This year, the two countries celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations.

Thailand is currently Vietnam's largest trade partner in ASEAN. In 2025, total bilateral trade turnover reached 22.1 billion USD, a 9% increase compared to 2024. In the first four months of 2026, total bilateral trade turnover reached nearly 8.6 billion USD, a 24% increase over the same period in 2025.
Regarding investment, Thailand currently has 797 active investment projects with a total registered capital of 15.4 billion USD. It ranks 8th out of 153 countries investing in Vietnam and second among ASEAN countries investing in Vietnam. Vietnam has over 20 active investment projects in Thailand, with a total registered capital of approximately 40 million USD.
In 2025, over 660,300 Vietnamese tourists visited Thailand, ranking 17th, while nearly 458,000 Thai tourists came to Vietnam, ranking 11th. Thailand is promoting the tourism cooperation initiative "Six Countries, One Destination".
