General Secretary To Lam meets Hun Sen

Hun Sen affirms the importance of neighborly relations during meeting with General Secretary To Lam, expresses desire for Cambodia and Vietnam to increase market openness.

During a meeting following a grand reception ceremony at the Cambodian Royal Palace this morning, Hun Sen emphasized that General Secretary To Lam's visit demonstrates the high regard the Communist Party of Vietnam and Vietnamese leaders hold for the good neighborly relations, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and sustainable, enduring partnership between the two nations, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hun Sen affirmed Cambodia's consistent valuing and continuous desire to strengthen the good neighborly relations, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and sustainable, enduring partnership. He lauded Vietnam's development, especially its socio-economic progress, and expressed a wish for both sides to further increase market openness to foster closer economic ties.

Commending the achievements made by the Cambodian people in recent years, General Secretary To Lam expressed confidence that under the enlightened reign of King Norodom Sihamoni, the leadership of the Senate, National Assembly, government, and the unity of its people, Cambodia will continue to achieve robust development, with steadily improving living standards, successfully building a nation of peace, harmony, cooperation, and sustainable development.

The General Secretary affirmed that Vietnam's achievements have benefited from invaluable support and assistance from international friends, particularly neighboring countries, including Cambodia. Both sides also exchanged information on their respective development goals and orientations, aiming for Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos to coordinate efforts for shared development.

On the same day, General Secretary To Lam visited Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk. The General Secretary expressed his honor to revisit Cambodia at the invitation of King Norodom Sihamoni; he wished the Queen Mother good health and for her continued important contributions to the prosperous development of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the friendship between the two peoples.

Vietnam and Cambodia established diplomatic relations on 24/6/1967. Vietnam is currently Cambodia's third largest trading partner, following China and the US, and also holds the position as Cambodia's largest trading partner within ASEAN. Bilateral trade turnover reached 11,33 billion USD in 2025, marking an increase of over 11,7% compared to 2024.

Vietnam currently ranks among the top 5 largest foreign direct investors in Cambodia, after China, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan. Vietnam has 229 active investment projects in Cambodia, with a total registered capital of approximately 2,94 billion USD.

Beyond trade and investment, the two countries also maintain cooperation in defense and security, education, transport, culture, telecommunications, among other areas. Vietnam and Cambodia closely coordinate their efforts at international and regional forums such as the United Nations, ASEAN, and Mekong sub-regional cooperation mechanisms.
