The incident occurred on 4/6 while a Lufthansa Boeing 787 was parked at Frankfurt Airport, Germany, preparing for a flight to Los Angeles, US.
Security camera footage revealed the Boeing 787's front landing gear collapsing and sliding forward, causing the aircraft to nosedive and impact the concrete apron. Both of the plane's engines also struck the ground. Two technicians standing nearby appeared unharmed.
A Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed: "At the time of the incident, the crew and ground staff were on board the aircraft; passengers had not yet boarded. Some individuals sustained injuries and received treatment."
Beyond the damage from the impact on the apron, the aircraft's fuselage also appeared to collide with a specialized cargo loader parked adjacent. Lufthansa has formed a crisis management team, but has not yet released the full extent of the incident's losses.
This incident is considered to have caused significant damage, as the Boeing 787 was only delivered to the airline in January.
Lufthansa is currently experiencing a shortage of long-haul aircraft. The airline is also in the process of gradually phasing out less efficient models and streamlining its fleet. This comes as the German carrier has repeatedly been forced to reorganize its long-haul operations due to persistent delivery delays from manufacturers.
