Officials in Minneapolis, Minnesota, reported that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, 37, during an encounter on 7/1.
The shooting has ignited a contentious dispute between state and federal authorities. Minnesota state officials immediately questioned the federal account, citing videos circulating online that appear to contradict the official narrative.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated the shooting occurred when "a female driver attempted to ram ICE agents on the street" in a south Minneapolis residential area. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem described the driver's actions as "terrorism" and the agent's firing as self-defense.
However, videos shared on social media show ICE agents blocking Good's car on the street. One agent approached to pull the door handle, seemingly attempting to remove her from the vehicle. As Good tried to drive away, the ICE agent standing in front of her car drew a weapon and fired multiple shots into the windshield.
The car continued a short distance before crashing into parked vehicles along the road. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara confirmed the female driver died from a gunshot wound to the head.
"I have seen that video. Do not believe the misleading interpretations," Minnesota Governor Tim Walz wrote on X.
As the video continued to circulate, Secretary Noem reiterated her argument that the female driver was shot while attempting to "take the life of or inflict injury" upon an ICE agent.
A witness told local media that she saw Good's car parked across Portland street, seemingly in protest of ICE's immigration enforcement operations. She stated that she heard ICE agents demanding the driver "exit the vehicle."
"The female driver was trying to turn around, and the ICE agent was standing in front of the car. The agent then drew a weapon, moved close to the front bumper, reached over the hood, and fired three to four shots," the witness recounted.

The exact details of the shooting remain unclear. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison stated that "there is still much unknown at this time," emphasizing that anyone found to have violated the law will be held accountable.
The shooting occurred one day after DHS announced the deployment of 2,000 ICE agents to Minnesota for what was described as the largest immigration enforcement operations in history.
In 9/2025, immigrant Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez was fatally shot by ICE in Chicago after ramming his vehicle into a group of agents.
