Iran executes man accused of spying for Israel

Iran has executed a man accused of spying for Israel, the 9th such execution in recent months.

Babak Shahbazi was accused of using his position as an air conditioning equipment installer to gather information from sensitive locations, including server rooms and facilities linked to the military and security agencies, Iranian media reported on 17/9.

Shahbazi allegedly worked with Esmaeil Fekri, who was executed in June for spying for Israel since early 2022.

Iranian media reported that Shahbazi has been executed, but did not specify when he was arrested or convicted. Shahbazi's lawyer appealed to the Supreme Court, but the appeal was rejected.

In June, Israel launched an unprecedented airstrike campaign against Iran, killing several high-ranking military commanders and more than 10 Iranian nuclear scientists. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks. The conflict ended after 12 days.

Iran subsequently announced it would fast-track trials of those arrested for alleged cooperation with Israel. At least 9 Iranians have been executed for spying in recent months. The most recent case occurred last month, when Roozbeh Vadi was executed for disclosing information to Israel about a nuclear scientist who was later assassinated.
