"I hope one day we can award the Nobel Peace Prize to Donald Trump," Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated during a press conference on 23/1, following her meeting with German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz.
Meloni expressed confidence in nominating the former US president for the Nobel Peace Prize if he helps achieve a "just and lasting peace for Ukraine."

Prime Minister Meloni shares a good relationship with President Trump, who has frequently expressed disappointment after not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize last year. In a message sent to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, released on 19/1, Trump indicated that not winning the Nobel Peace Prize meant he "no longer felt compelled to only think of peace."
The former US president signed a document establishing the Peace Council on 22/1. This organization was initially set up to oversee the Gaza ceasefire agreement and the reconstruction process of the strip, but Trump hinted the council would soon mediate global conflicts.
Italy received an invitation to join the council, but Prime Minister Meloni informed Trump that her nation faced constitutional difficulties. According to media reports, Italy's constitution does not permit the country to participate in an organization headed by a single foreign leader.
Trump serves as the chairman of the Peace Council, as well as the US representative and executive chairman.
Prime Minister Meloni stated she requested Trump reconsider the council's operational framework to suit the needs of Italy and other European countries. She emphasized, "We must try to do this. The presence of countries like ours can make a difference."
