Mark Anderson, 36, arrived at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, on the evening of 28/1. He identified himself as an FBI agent and claimed to possess a court order for the release of Luigi Mangione, who is a suspect in the murder of a UnitedHealthcare CEO.
When prison officials requested identification, Anderson provided a Minnesota driver's license. He also stated he was carrying a weapon in his bag. Anderson then threw several documents, which were complaints addressed to the Department of Justice, at a prison guard.

A search of Anderson's backpack revealed a barbecue fork and a round steel blade. He was arrested on charges of impersonating an FBI agent and was scheduled to appear in court on the afternoon of 29/1.
Anderson had been working at a pizza shop in New York after an unsuccessful job search. His connection to Mangione remains unclear. Mangione has been held in federal prison since his arrest in December 2024 for the murder of Brian Thompson.
Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealth Group's insurance division—the largest health insurer in the US—was in New York for a meeting. He was shot three times on a Manhattan street at 6:45 on 4/12/2024.
Police apprehended Mangione at a fast-food restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, about 480 km from the crime scene, after a five-day manhunt. Investigators reported that Mangione had notes criticizing insurance companies for exploiting the US healthcare system, accusing them of "corruption and greed".
Mangione has been charged with murder but has pleaded not guilty. As of now, a jury has not been selected, and a trial date has not been set.
