Neighbors describe Charlie Kirk's accused killer as 'very normal'

Neighbors of Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the killing of Charlie Kirk, expressed surprise at the news, describing him as "very normal" and "mild-mannered."

A quiet neighborhood in Washington City, Utah, became the center of attention after 22-year-old resident Tyler Robinson was arrested by police for the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Orem earlier this week. Police vehicles and media surrounded the area on 12/9.

Many neighbors were shocked by the news of Robinson's alleged involvement in the killing. Kristen Schwerman, who lives a few houses away from the Robinson family, said she has known them for years. She described the 22-year-old as mild-mannered, though somewhat reserved.

"I’m sure most people in the neighborhood are in shock because they’ve lived here for so long and they’ve known him since he was little. My impression of Tyler was a quiet, very smart, mild-mannered kid and never caused any problems," Schwerman said.

55-year-old Melissa Tait, who lives near the Robinson home, said Robinson and his family were "just like any other neighbors" and "no different than my family." "It’s just really unfortunate that their son made a really bad decision," she said.

The suspect was reportedly turned in by his own family after his father recognized him in photos and videos released by police and then notified a friend. Robinson's motive remains unclear.

In a phone interview on 12/9, a high school friend of Robinson said the suspect had expressed criticism of President Donald Trump a few years prior, despite his family's conservative leanings. However, the friend was unsure of Robinson's recent political views as they had lost touch after graduation.

Voter records indicate that Robinson was not affiliated with any political party before the 2024 election. His parents are registered Republicans.

14-year-old Miles Meloni, a neighbor of the Robinson family and a supporter of Charlie Kirk, expressed deep sadness for what both the Robinson and Kirk families are going through. Meloni voiced concerns about political violence in the US and his desire for change.

"I think if families are seeing that their, you know, family members are displaying any signs of violent tendencies, they need to get their kids, family members, friends, whoever, help," Meloni said.
