"Today the entire country celebrates", Paraguayan President Santiago Pena posted on social media on 29/6, after his national team defeated Germany in a penalty shootout to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals. The post included an image of him signing the decree declaring 30/6 a national holiday.
The South American squad delivered a major upset, defeating the four-time World Cup champions 4-3 in the penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw throughout 120 minutes of play. This result is considered one of the biggest surprises in the history of the football World Cup.

President Pena added, "This is a victory for a team that represents the deepest part of our identity: resilience, faith, and the strength of people who never give up."
The decree states that Paraguay's achievement transcends the realm of sports and deserves national celebration.
"The government cannot remain indifferent to this tremendous achievement. Conditions must be created for all Paraguayans to celebrate this historic day together", Pena emphasized.
Paraguay became the second South American nation to declare a national holiday following a World Cup victory this time. Last week, Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa also announced a national holiday after his national team defeated Germany 2-1 in the group stage, securing their spot in the knockout rounds.
