Swiss International Air Lines flight 55, bound for Zurich from Boston Logan International Airport in Massachusetts, aborted takeoff due to an "engine issue" at approximately 6:25 PM on 16/9, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Videos circulating on social media show flames erupting from the number 2 engine of the Airbus A330-300 as it began to accelerate. The engine briefly sputtered flames and emitted a loud bang, with smoke billowing from the rear of the aircraft.
The plane subsequently decelerated and came to a complete stop. Emergency responders and fire trucks were immediately dispatched to the scene.
"The crew had to abort takeoff. The FAA also briefly held some arriving flights before the aircraft could taxi off the runway. We will investigate the incident," the FAA stated.
Passenger Molly Furrer recounted that about halfway down the runway, there was a sudden loud bang and a jolt, causing the plane to lurch forward. "I felt the plane braking and skidding on the runway until it came to a complete halt," she said.
No injuries were reported. The number of passengers on board remains unclear. Passengers were transferred to another aircraft and departed from Boston Logan International Airport around 11 PM to continue their journey to Zurich.
