On 10/12/2024, US magazine Forbes unveiled its list of the world's 100 most powerful women. The top two positions remained unchanged from last year, with the most notable inclusion being Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, who secured the third spot.
Takaichi's entry marks a significant milestone as she is the first female Prime Minister of Japan to feature on this annual list. Elected in 10, the former economic security minister now leads her country's government. Forbes highlighted that her decisions could "shape East Asian power structures and the stability of global manufacturing" amid advancements in artificial intelligence and the increasing importance of semiconductor supply chains.
For the fourth consecutive year, the top two positions were held by European leaders. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was named the world's most powerful woman, followed by European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde in second place. Further down the list, Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni ranked fourth, with President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum taking the fifth spot. The list also recognized many other prominent female politicians and businesswomen.
Forbes' annual list aims to honor women who have made significant impacts across global economics, politics, science, technology, culture, and society. The magazine assesses candidates based on criteria such as power, financial influence, scope of impact, ability to create change, and overall presence.

This year's compilation showcased many women actively contributing across diverse sectors, particularly information technology and finance. However, Forbes also noted that women still face limited access to the highest levels of power and a disparity exists with men in top leadership roles.
