Prime Minister proposes early formation of Vietnam-India technology connection strategy

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung proposed Vietnam and India quickly form a technology connection strategy, focusing on key sectors such as artificial intelligence.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12/9 in New Delhi, during his working visit to India for the 18th BRICS Summit, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung noted that amidst global and regional uncertainties, Vietnam and India have always been close, loyal, and steadfast friends. He emphasized that Vietnam and India share many similar development perspectives and goals, creating opportunities for the two nations to collaborate across various sectors.

Prime Minister Modi commended Vietnam's participation in BRICS, stating that Vietnam's presence at the 18th BRICS Summit elevated the conference's stature.

Both leaders agreed that Vietnam and India are two of the world's fastest-growing economies, possessing high complementarity and vast cooperation potential.

The two Prime Ministers expressed determination to accelerate measures to achieve the bilateral trade target of USD 25 billion soon. They also agreed to facilitate market access for each other's products, especially: pharmaceuticals, agricultural produce, fishery products, and livestock.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung proposed establishing an economic corridor and supply chains to enhance connectivity between the two economies. He welcomed major Indian corporations to invest in Vietnam's technology, infrastructure, energy, and pharmaceutical sectors.

The two Prime Ministers also highlighted the importance of connectivity across road, rail, air, and sea routes. They agreed to explore promoting railway connection projects, forming a South Asia - Southeast Asia connection corridor, and linking the two countries' seaports with the Asia-Europe maritime route.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung requested India to increase the frequency of direct flights connecting major cities in both countries.

The two Prime Ministers affirmed defense-security cooperation as a crucial pillar of bilateral relations. They agreed to boost cooperation in defense industry and military trade, provide training and preferential credit, and promptly organize the first meeting of the Diplomatic-Defense Dialogue mechanism.

In science and technology, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung proposed that both sides quickly establish a Vietnam-India technology connection strategy. This strategy would focus on key sectors such as: artificial intelligence, 5G/6G mobile network technology, developing cooperation programs for training artificial intelligence and semiconductor engineers, providing digital technology education for the younger generation, and connecting startups and innovation enterprises from both countries.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung also suggested that both sides intensify cultural, sports, yoga, and Buddhist exchanges in 2027, marking the 55th anniversary of Vietnam-India diplomatic relations.

Vietnam and India established diplomatic relations in 1972. The two countries upgraded their ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership when General Secretary and State President To Lam made a state visit to India in May. Bilateral trade reached USD 16.4 billion in 2025. In the first 7 months of 2026, bilateral trade hit USD 11.78 billion, a 28.4% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
