US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared a "golden era" in US-Hungary relations during a joint press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Budapest on 16/2. Rubio praised the close relationship between Orban and President Donald Trump, stating, "Your success is our success." He added that this "golden era" stems not only from shared values between the two nations but also from Orban's connection with the US President.
Rubio emphasized that a prosperous Hungary serves America's national interest as long as Prime Minister Orban remains in office. He also suggested that the two countries have not yet fully realized their potential for bilateral cooperation.
Rubio's statement comes as Hungary prepares for elections in April. Recent poll results indicate Prime Minister Orban is trailing opponent Peter Magyar of the center-right Tisza party. Orban faces challenges in revitalizing Hungary's economy due to soaring inflation following the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine in early 2022.

At the press conference, Prime Minister Orban affirmed Hungary's robust democracy, adding that a government would be formed "based on the will of the Hungarian people" after the election. He remarked, "Sometimes I lose, sometimes I win," emphasizing his lack of fear of defeat, though he hopes for victory.
President Trump has previously publicly endorsed Prime Minister Orban in the election, describing him as "a truly strong and powerful leader." The US President has repeatedly shown support for conservative-leaning leaders globally, most recently Argentine President Javier Milei and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
The outcome of Hungary's upcoming election will significantly impact Europe, particularly the rising conservative and far-right political movements across the continent. Orban has long been one of Trump's key allies in Europe, frequently at odds with the EU on various issues. The Hungarian Prime Minister also maintains friendly relations with Russia and has been critical of Ukraine. (Pham Giang, according to Reuters, Politico)
