Russian border provincial capital hit by 'largest ever' shelling

Russian officials stated Ukraine shelled the city of Belgorod on the largest scale since the start of the conflict, reportedly using himars systems.

The Belgorod regional crisis management center announced on the evening of 24/1 that the city had experienced its largest shelling attack to date. Preliminary reports indicated no casualties, though energy facilities were damaged. On-duty maintenance and response teams were dispatched to the scene.

The agency reported the attack caused fires, with debris damaging two roofs in Tavrovo village. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov stated Ukraine appeared to use himars multiple rocket launchers.

AMK Mapping, an X account specializing in open-source intelligence on the conflict, estimated that Ukrainian forces launched 36 rockets from bm-21 grad multiple rocket launchers and at least 18 rockets from himars systems targeting energy infrastructure in Belgorod city.

Most rockets were intercepted, but some hit the Belgorod thermal power plant, causing power outages in the city center. Power has since been fully restored, but water supply services in some parts of the urban area remain disrupted," AMK Mapping reported.

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated its air defenses intercepted 52 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (uavs), including three aircraft in Belgorod province, but did not mention other weapons or related damage.

Belgorod is the capital of the eponymous Russian border province. Both the city and the province have been frequent targets of Ukrainian attacks since the start of the conflict.

Russia and Ukraine have regularly launched attacks on each other's territories since the conflict began. The latest attacks occurred as the first direct talks between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine since the start of the conflict concluded on 24/1 without an agreement, despite being described as positive and constructive.

Ahead of the meeting, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized on 23/1 that Russia firmly demanded Ukraine withdraw from areas it still controlled in the Donbass region to end the conflict.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the possibility of ceding to Russia territories Ukraine currently controls.
