San Francisco restaurant 'stoned' for using AI-generated menu images

AJ and Lyndsey Lozano removed AI-generated menu images at their Grind & Unwind restaurant, days after receiving harsh criticism from local residents and experiencing vandalism.

A San Francisco restaurant, Grind & Unwind, recently faced significant backlash and vandalism after displaying menu images created using artificial intelligence (AI). Owners AJ and Lyndsey Lozano were compelled to remove the controversial images and address graffiti following widespread criticism from the local community.

The controversy began when the Lozano family displayed AI-generated images of their dishes in the restaurant's window. This marketing strategy quickly drew strong disapproval, particularly on Reddit. A post on 30/6, titled "Delicious but trash," garnered over 670 upvotes and featured a close-up of the menu board. "I find the use of AI images inappropriate for the business culture of this neighborhood," commented the original poster. Another user remarked, "I'd rather see terrible photos taken in a light box with a one-megapixel camera than this AI nonsense." Specific criticisms targeted the unnatural appearance of the food, with one person likening the focaccia to a "loofah" or a "lung," a Frappuccino drink appearing to wear "fishnets," and a pulled pork sandwich topping resembling mutated cordyceps from "The Last of Us" video game.

The situation escalated on the morning of 2/7 when Lyndsey Lozano arrived at the restaurant to discover its outdoor awning vandalized with red graffiti. Both she and AJ felt frustrated and disheartened by the incident. "It caused a stir on Haight Street, which is both good and bad, I suppose," Lyndsey Lozano said. "But the feedback was not what we expected." She questioned the intensity of the reaction, asking, "Is it really so terrible that you have to act like that?"

Lyndsey explained that the AI poster was merely temporary. The couple, busy raising three children all under 5 years old, hadn't even installed a permanent sign for the establishment yet. On 6/7, the Lozano family took action, removing the AI images and painting over the graffiti, a repair that cost an estimated more than 700 USD.

Grind & Unwind opened in May on Haight Street in San Francisco, California. AJ and Lyndsey Lozano took over the space previously occupied by Citrus Club, a popular Asian fusion eatery and bar that had been a neighborhood staple for decades, known for its affordable noodles and creative cocktails. Citrus Club's sudden closure a month prior inadvertently complicated the new restaurant's efforts to win over the highly connected local community.

Despite the initial difficulties, the Lozanos are actively working to improve the restaurant's image and offerings. They have installed LED lights around the windows and prominently placed the pastry counter, allowing customers to admire Lyndsey's homemade creations. Business is now improving, and the family has hired a chef to introduce new menu items, including smashburgers. They also plan to host community events such as pasta-making classes and paint-and-sip evenings. "We hope people will come try our quality food and truly support us," Lozano stated, looking forward to a more positive future for Grind & Unwind.
