The South Korean national football team finished Group A of the World Cup with 3 points after three matches, securing a win against the Czech Republic but suffering defeats to Mexico and South Africa. This outcome led to South Korea's exit from the World Cup 2026 group stage.
On 28/6, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung stated he was "completely baffled" by the results and questioned the Korea Football Association (KFA)'s decision to appoint head coach Hong Myung-bo. President Lee suggested that competence was not prioritized during the selection process.

"Given the substantial public tax money and state support invested in the team's World Cup participation, I propose that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism thoroughly investigate the specific circumstances of this incident, analyze the causes, and develop comprehensive measures to prevent recurrence and improve the situation," President Lee affirmed.
The Blue House chief pledged that his administration would swiftly advance sports management reforms to ensure a similar situation never happens again.
Head coach Hong Myung-bo, a former star defender for the South Korean national team, announced his resignation on 28/6.
"This was not an easy decision for me, but once I accepted the responsibility, I thought of nothing else but fulfilling my duties until the very last moment," Hong stated.
