Iran declares it will 'solely control' Hormuz for 30 days

Foreign Minister Araghchi announced Iran will assume full control of the Strait of Hormuz for the next 30 days, stating no other parties are required.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated today during a visit to Iraq that the Strait of Hormuz will remain under Iran's complete supervision and management for the next 30 days. He added that once all obstacles are cleared, the maritime route's full capacity will be restored.

Araghchi underscored Iran's sole responsibility for managing Hormuz, asserting "no nation or third party is involved." He warned that any unilateral actions deviating from the current agreement would complicate the situation and impede the strait's reopening. Araghchi also urged all parties to adhere to the peace roadmap memorandum of understanding and prevent the agreement from being derailed.

This declaration comes amid escalating tensions between Iran and the US. Tehran recently launched retaliatory strikes against US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, following American airstrikes on targets within Iranian territory.

Earlier, US Central Command (CENTCOM), responsible for US military operations in the Middle East, announced it had attacked Iranian missile depots, unmanned aerial vehicles, and coastal radar sites. These strikes were in retaliation for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attack on the Panama-flagged oil tanker Kiku in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned it would implement traffic control measures in the Strait of Hormuz and impose harsher penalties on vessels violating regulations. Iran also protested that Oman and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) failed to consult Tehran before announcing a new maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran asserted it would only guarantee vessel safety along the route hugging the Iranian coast.

A memorandum reached in early 6 stipulated Iran's agreement to ensure safe and free passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz for a 60-day period. In recent days, Tehran and Washington have consistently accused each other of ceasefire violations. President Donald Trump warned that Iran would "no longer exist" if the US resumed military operations. Meanwhile, experts anticipate continued incidents related to the Strait of Hormuz in the near future.
