"Thanks to a very productive meeting between myself and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, we have formed a framework for a future agreement concerning Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region. This solution, if finalized, will bring great benefits to the US and all NATO members," US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on 21/1.
President Trump stated that based on this, he would not implement the tariffs scheduled to take effect from 1/2 against European allies. Discussions regarding Vom Vang and Greenland are ongoing, with more information to be released later.
"Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and other personnel, as needed, will be in charge of negotiations and will report directly to me," Trump continued. "Thank you for your interest in this matter."
The specific content of the framework is not yet clear. US media reported the framework has 6 key points: The US will control some small areas, participate in mineral exploitation in Greenland, the agreement will be indefinite, and its goal is to prevent Russian influence. The agreement will include the Vom Vang defense system and pave the way for US-backed infrastructure investment on the autonomous island.

Responding to reporters in Davos, Switzerland, President Trump stated the agreement delivered "everything we wanted" and would be effective "forever." He hesitated when asked if the US would gain sovereignty over Greenland.
"This is a decisive long-term agreement," Trump replied. "I believe this agreement puts all parties in a very good position, especially regarding security, minerals, and all other factors. It is an agreement that everyone quickly embraced, truly great for the US, helping us achieve everything we desired."
NATO confirmed on the same day that Secretary General Rutte had a "very productive" meeting with President Trump on Arctic security, on the sidelines of the ongoing World Economic Forum's annual conference in Davos.
"Discussions among NATO allies on the framework the President mentioned will focus on ensuring Arctic security through collective effort, particularly among the 7 NATO nations in the Arctic region," said NATO spokesperson Allison Hart.
Hart added that officials from the US, Denmark, and Greenland would continue negotiations to ensure that Russia and Trung Quoc never gain an economic or military foothold on the island.

Greenland is the world's largest island, located near North America, between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. The island belongs to Denmark, has a population of 57,000, and an area of approximately 2,16 million sq km. It lies on the shortest route from North America to Europe, making it a strategically important location for Washington. Greenland possesses abundant mineral resources, most of which are untapped.
After taking office for his second term, Trump intensified efforts for the US to control the island, escalating tensions between the US and Europe. The US President had previously not ruled out military action and threatened tariffs from 1/2 on 8 European nations until a deal to purchase the island was reached.
Speaking in Davos on 21/1, Trump pledged not to use force regarding Greenland, a move welcomed by Danish and Greenlandic officials. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof stated that the US and Europe were now "on a path to de-escalation."
