A video capturing a conversation between a US Border Patrol agent and a protester, who was demonstrating against the government's strict immigration enforcement on 8/1, offered insight into the demeanor of federal agents performing security duties amid rising tensions across the United States.
During the conversation with the protester, the agent established a connection by highlighting their shared experience of having served in the US military.

"You signed up to be a service member, right?" the agent asked the woman. "A soldier's goal is to go to combat. The Border Patrol's mission is different. I understand, because I was in the Air Force and I was a pilot."
"Air Force? They're the flying guys. If you were a Marine, I would have brought you some crayons," the woman said, referring to a widely circulated humorous jab that Marines are so naive they would eat crayons instead of using them to draw.
"I love you," the agent said as they both laughed at the woman's joke. "I would love to hug you."
"You can't do that," the woman said, looking at the other agents.
"Oh, yes, I can," the agent replied.
"I'd be okay with that," the woman said. "I'll hug you if you hug me."
"I will. Come here," the agent responded.
The agent then stepped out of line and walked over to hug the woman.
"We have hearts too, you know what I mean," the agent said.
The exchange occurred one day after Renee Nicole Good, 37, a mother of three, was fatally shot by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. She was reportedly attempting to ram the agent with her car during an immigration enforcement operation.
Department of Homeland Security officials described the ICE agent's shooting as an act of "self-defense", while Democrats labeled it "murder".
Although no wrongdoing has been alleged against the agent, the shooting has sparked protests across the United States.
