The US State Department has approved a potential USD 9 billion arms deal for Saudi Arabia, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) of the Pentagon announced on 30/1. The package includes 730 PAC-3 MSE missiles and associated equipment for the Patriot air defense system.
"This equipment will support US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a major non-NATO ally and a force for political stability and economic progress in the Persian Gulf", the announcement stated.

According to the DSCA, the Patriot missiles will help protect US, Saudi Arabian, and allied ground forces in the region. They will also significantly enhance Riyadh's contribution to missile defense in the Middle East.
On the same day, the DSCA announced that the US State Department also approved four potential arms sales to Israel. The largest deal involves 30 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, complete with rocket launchers and advanced target designation systems, valued at USD 3,8 billion.
Another deal, valued at USD 1,98 billion, covers the sale of 3,250 light tactical vehicles. These vehicles will transport troops and supplies, extending lines of communication for the Israeli military.
Tel Aviv will spend an additional USD 740 million on power packs for armored personnel carriers that have been in service since 2008. The remaining USD 150 million is allocated for a small number of light multi-mission helicopters, intended to supplement Israel's existing similar equipment.
The DSCA emphasized that these deals will bolster Israel's capability to counter current and future threats by improving its border and infrastructure protection. The agency stressed that the contracts will not affect the regional military balance.

"The US is committed to ensuring Israel's security. Supporting its ability to develop and maintain a strong, ready self-defense capability is vital to US national interests", the announcement stated.
The US Congress will have 30 days from receiving the notification to decide whether to block the deals. If there is no opposition from Congress, the contracts will be presented to President Donald Trump for his signature.
These announcements come amidst high tensions in the Middle East, with the risk of US military action against Iran. President Trump stated on 30/1 that Iran would seek negotiations to avoid facing US attacks, and Tehran also left open the possibility of dialogue.
President Trump is also advancing his peace plan for the Gaza Strip, aiming to end the Israel-Hamas conflict and rebuild the territory after a prolonged period of conflict.
