US President Donald Trump posted a video on Truth Social on 13/3, showing an airstrike targeting a series of Iranian objectives, including a runway and airport infrastructure, leading to large explosions. The exact time and location of the attack were not specified.
CNN's geolocation data identified the airstrike's target as Kharg island, off the coast of Iran.

President Trump had previously stated that the US military carried out "one of the most powerful airstrikes in Middle East history," completely eliminating all military targets on Kharg island, which he called "Iran's jewel."
He emphasized that he ordered not to destroy oil infrastructure on Kharg island "for justifiable reasons," but warned that this decision could change if Iran "takes any action that impedes the free and safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz."
Iran's Fars News Agency, citing sources on the ground, reported that over 15 explosions occurred on the island, with thick smoke rising. Targets hit included military defensive positions, the Joshen base, an air traffic control tower, and a helicopter hangar.
Kharg island is located in the Persian Gulf, approximately 25 km off the coast of Iran and over 480 km from the Strait of Hormuz. The island, which is only 6 km long and covers an area of 20 km2, appeared to remain intact during the initial two weeks of the conflict.
Facilities on Kharg have a processing capacity of 7 million barrels of oil per day, and approximately 90% of Iran's crude oil exports pass through the island, primarily destined for Asia, especially China. Given Iran's economy heavily relies on energy exports, Kharg is considered a vital link for the nation.

The US and Israel had previously shown caution regarding decisions involving Kharg island. US media reported that the Trump administration was considering seizing this strategic island as the conflict in the Middle East continued.
Experts had previously warned that attacks on Kharg island would disrupt a significant portion of Iran's crude oil exports, potentially leading to fierce retaliation in the Strait of Hormuz or against regional energy infrastructure.
