Authorities in Joao Pessoa, Brazil, reported that 19-year-old Gerson de Melo Machado deliberately climbed into the lion enclosure at Arruda Camara Zoo last weekend. He scaled a protective wall over 6 meters high, climbed a nearby tree, and then jumped into the lion's den.
The female lion, Leona, who was in the enclosure, spotted Machado, charged at him, dragged him to the ground, and fatally bit him. The attack occurred in front of many zoo visitors, causing widespread panic.
Arruda Camara Zoo stated this was a regrettable incident and has suspended operations for investigation.

Veterinarian Thiago Nery stated that the protective systems around the lion enclosure were robust, but Machado's actions were unforeseeable and outside the zoo's operational protocols.
Arruda Camara Zoo also dismissed the possibility of euthanizing the lioness Leona after the attack. The zoo affirmed that the animal had shown no aggressive behavior until Machado entered her enclosure.
Child protection advisor Veronica Oliveira, who had worked with Machado for 8 years in the city's child care program, said the young man was considered to have behavioral issues. His mother and grandparents suffered from schizophrenia.
Oliveira stated that the young man dreamed of becoming a lion tamer and had once tried to board a plane he believed was departing for Africa.
