Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Kyiv is in discussions with Washington regarding the potential deployment of US soldiers to Ukraine. Speaking during an online press conference on 30/12, Zelensky emphasized that a US military presence would be a major security enhancement for Ukraine.
He stated, "We are, of course, discussing this issue with President Trump and representatives of the alliance. That would demonstrate a firm stance on security guarantees."
The Ukrainian leader also expressed his readiness to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in any format. Despite previously emphasizing a deep distrust between the two sides, Zelensky said, "I told President Trump and European leaders that I am ready to meet President Putin in any format. I am not afraid of any format, but the main issue is that the Russians should not be afraid."

These discussions follow US President Donald Trump's statement on 28/12 that he and President Zelensky "may have come very close" to an agreement to end the conflict, despite a contentious territorial issue. Trump, while more cautious than Zelensky on security guarantees, affirmed that the two sides had covered 95% of the path towards an agreement. He expressed hope that European countries would assume most responsibility with US backing.
On the same day, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also hinted at the possibility of US soldiers deploying to the contact line between Russia and Ukraine. Tusk suggested that peace in Ukraine could be achieved within weeks through US security guarantees, though he cautioned against absolute certainty.
The White House has not commented on the statements by Zelensky or Tusk.
The territorial issue remains a major obstacle to achieving peace in Ukraine. Russia seeks to control the entire Donbass region, while Ukraine proposes freezing the current front lines.
In an effort to find a compromise, the US suggested Ukraine withdraw from areas it still holds in Donbass to establish a free economic zone. However, how this zone would function in practice remains unclear.
Russia, on 30/12, indicated its negotiating stance would become tougher. This follows allegations that Ukraine launched unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to attack President Putin's residence in Novgorod province, a claim Ukraine has denied.
