Video: Weibo.
Dashcam footage captured an alarming incident on 8/3 on a road in Qingyuan, Guangdong province, where an obstruction became visible from a distance. The driver initially mistook it for a plastic bag.
According to NTDTV, the driver was using a driving assistance system. The system suddenly detected the obstruction ahead and automatically reduced speed. Prompted by his wife, the driver quickly switched to manual control and braked sharply. Upon closer inspection, he discovered four children lying closely together on the ground. The children only stood up and left the scene after the car came to a complete stop.
The video quickly garnered significant attention after being posted on Chinese social media platforms and shared widely. Many viewers commented that they, too, initially thought the obstruction was a speed bump. A common sentiment was that the driver's experience in the video was terrifying.
Many people shared the observation that when driving on quiet rural roads, individuals often travel at higher speeds. They noted that in such a situation, without the intervention of an automated system or swift human detection, the consequences could be unpredictable.
Some speculated that the children were imitating a social media trend of "pretending to be speed bumps" and were completely unaware of the inherent danger of their actions.
On 9/3, local authorities confirmed that they had contacted the parents of the children involved and requested closer supervision of their children to prevent similar incidents.
