At 4:47 a.m. on 24/8, the roundabout near the Caltex gas station in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, was quiet. A van approached and legally entered the roundabout, driving on the left side of the road as is customary in South Africa.
Suddenly, headlights flashed from the right as a car approached at high speed. The car barely grazed the front of the van as it flew through the roundabout and continued down the road. The van veered toward the gas station, continuing at a slow speed before coming to a stop. The car continued at high speed for a considerable distance. The condition of those in the two vehicles is unknown.
Old Howich Road, near the roundabout shown in the video, has been frequently featured in the media due to its high rate of traffic accidents. Two accidents on 3/8 and 4/8 both involved trucks. In January, the community called on officials to enhance safety measures in the area following a fatal accident involving a 76-year-old woman.
